My Stuff: Websites and other online bits
I seem to have quite a few different websites dotted around here and there. I am good at coming up with ideas for new websites - unfortunately this comes at a cost, and a lot of the time I will move on to the next idea before the last one, or the one before that is finished. Here are a few that have reached a sharable stage.
Recktangle
Recktangle is the company I set up when I started doing bits of freelance online marketing and web development work. The name came from a reference in one of Irvine Welsh's books that I read a few years ago, I registered the domain to use for something else!
The web design market at this level is very competitive, so to pitch ourselves above competitors I take great care in my work and also offer a lot of functionality in the sites I produce.
Most of the websites I build use the Silverstripe content management system, its a fairly flexible system and easy for end users to learn.
Assemble
This is a company I created as a joint venture with a colleague who ran an agency in Chesterfield
Our company aim is to provide professional website design and online marketing at affordable prices for small to medium businesses and start-ups.
The Double Glazing Fund
The Double Glazing Fund was an idea I came up with in order to get more freelance website and online marketing work.
The site will hopefully allow me to save up for some double glazed windows for my house.
Disconnected
The Disconnected website was launched during the summer/autumn of 2010. The site is designed as hub for people with an interest in electronic music. The site has four main categories; podcast, reviews, interviews and events.
To launch the website we organised a big warehouse party in a disused building in the middle of Nottingham and plan to do more events there over the coming months.
We are currently working on a re-design of the logo and website, plus launching a new record label.
Audiophile
I have ran audiophile with a friend for the past 4 years. We put on regular club nights and events in and around Nottingham throughout the year
We also have a podcast which we update on a regular basis. This helps keep the brand in peoples minds even when we have no events on the agenda.
Turn Off Your Lights
The aim of my Turn Off Your Lights website is to name and shame companies who waste energy by leaving their lights on when people aren't at work. The site has received praise from many sources and has already been featured by the BBC.
The website has taken much longer than anticipated to complete! It is certainly suffering from project creep as I add more and more features (and code!). Watch this space..
Count Characters
This count characters site is a tool for counting the words and characters in a section of writing. I use it most days, it's really useful when writing title tags, meta descriptions or any sentences that can't exceed a certain amount.
The site was a collaboration with Jon Winstanley and uses a jquery plugin to count the characters and letters. There was talk of developing the site to show ads based on the writing that visitors entered into the counter, but this isn't really a priority!
